Composition
We do not need to get bogged down with the finer points of composition, that can come later when we are proficient in handling paint. But a few guidelines will help you to produce attractive paintings.

  1. Place the subject of your painting towards the middle of your paper but never in the exact centre.
  2. The subject of the painting should should take up the larger part of the painting and dominate it.
  3. Make sure that skylines or horizon lines do not cut your paper in half.
  4. Make sure that there are quiet as well as busy areas in your painting - the viewer's eye needs somewhere to rest.
  5. Try to ensure that you do not have continuous lines which will lead the viewer's eye out of the painting or which will finish in the exact corner of the paper.
  6. Do not be afraid to move elements in the scene before you to achieve a better composition.
